Teching V8 Metal Engine Model Kit builds a working V8 engine with two angled cylinder banks, exposed overhead camshafts and timing chains that move once the motor runs.
Why it is listed here
Most kits on our metal list are etched-steel sheets you bend into shape; this one is built from cast and machined parts in anodized aluminum and stainless steel, closer to a mechanical model than a sheet puzzle. The listing says a concealed electric motor drives the pistons and valvetrain in a four-stroke sequence, with viewing openings to watch the internal motion. At almost 8 in wide and 7 in tall it has real desk presence, and the box includes a tool set, foam parts trays and a metal gift box.
What the build involves
Lay out the foam trays and match parts to their labels before each step, since a 500+ part build is easier to manage in stages. Follow the manual closely on the timing chains and camshafts so the moving parts stay in sync, and turn the engine by hand before running the motor to check nothing binds. Check the manual for the motor’s power requirements before you start, and give it a spot about 8 in square on a desk or shelf.
Before you order
